Education and Teaching Schools, Programs and Career Training

Education is a diverse field with a wide variety of career paths. Whether you want to become an ESL teacher or a special education teacher, or whether you want to focus on early childhood education or education administration, you generally need to become licensed and attend education training programs.

Different Types of Education and Training Schools

The exact type of education career you plan to pursue informs what type of education program you should complete. In some cases, certification and training are mandatory, while in others, having a degree is simply recommended. To work as a kindergarten, elementary, or secondary school teacher in the public system, for example, you typically need at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited education and training program, plus licensing. With private schools, the certification requirements are a little more flexible, although a bachelor's or master's degree is strongly recommended. To work in some specialized areas of education, you may need work experience of expertise in a particular area more than formal training in pedagogy. However, pursuing your credentials in a teacher training program can enhance your job opportunities and increase your salary.
  • Language instruction
  • Vocational instruction
  • Assistant positions
  • Education administrators, university professors, and special education instructors usually require more formal training than other types of education professionals due to the specialized nature of their work. A master's degree is often required, although the exact training requirements may vary.

    Education and Training Career Outlook

Career opportunities tend to be quite favorable for those who have successfully completed teaching certification programs. Whether the economy is booming or flagging, the world always needs more qualified instructors. The Bureau of Labor Statitics estimates that new opportunities for administrators, teachers, and education resource specialists should keep pace with the national average for most other occupations. Equally important, however, teaching is an incredibly mobile profession, meaning you can take advantage of rising demand for teachers outside of the country, working at international schools all of the world.
