A new online scam that attempts to gain personal information via a job offer is a growing concern among human resources departments all across the country. Here's how the scam works and what it can cost an unwitting applicant.

University of Phoenix Online allows students to earn their degrees and advance their careers - all online.

A marketing manager who began working with a human resources web site specializing in career placement found out the hard way that everything is not as it appears to be. After responding to a promising job offer, this applicant sent the human resources professional in charge of hiring a host of identifying information across the Internet. It was only after calling the supposed company and finding out that there was no such position that he realized he had been the target of an identity scam.

Human Resources: Faux Positions on the Internet

  • No Leverage. With a competitive career market, applicants must succumb to the requests of human resources departments to a large degree.
  • Perfect Design. Online career firms seemed to be the perfect answer for professional furthering their technology careers.
  • Daily Monitoring. This applicant must now monitor his credit rating and bank accounts for changes daily.
