If you've ever needed a shoulder to cry on, a place to "vent," or just someone who was willing to listen, you recognize the importance of a counseling degree. Those who pursue career training in this field can make others' lives more bearable.

If you enjoy providing guidance or a sympathetic ear for those in need, consider pursuing a career education for a counseling degree. With a counseling degree, you can take your gift for compassion and understanding to a whole new level.

Where to Start: Career Training

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for those who have earned counseling degrees should be abundant, with more job openings than there are qualified counseling candidates.

To become one of those qualified candidates, you must first shoot for the appropriate career education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that a master's level counseling degree is the industry standard for becoming licensed to practice in most states.

Before committing to the years of hard work necessary to earn a master's level counseling degree, be sure to think through what type of counseling career you want. Do you want to be an educational counselor, a career counselor, or a corporate counselor? From rehabilitation to substance-abuse care, the type of career path you choose will determine which courses you'll take. It can be expensive to switch gears half-way through your career training.

Putting Your Counseling Degree to Good Use!

The BLS reports that those with counseling degrees held about 600 thousand jobs in 2004, and the field will continue to expand. It also says about four out of every 10 counselors are employed by state and local governments, while the majority of other people with counseling degrees find work in the health industry.

If you're interested in finding work in a field rich in both experience and value, consider earning your counseling degree today!
