In today's global market, corporations, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions want a workforce that represents the cultural and ethnic diversity of their communities. Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action (EO/AA) specialists work with human resources departments to hire candidates that fit the bill. EO/AA specialists may also promote cross cultural training and understanding through presentations and cultural events. In large organizations, EO/AA specialists provide statistical reports to appropriate regulatory agencies.
Liberal Arts and Ethnic Studies Degrees Useful
If you're interested in a career that will put your liberal arts background to good use, consider an EO/AA position. This type of work requires a broad understanding of humanities, human behavior and psychology, and multicultural or ethnic studies. Cross cultural studies are particularly important, as businesses and academic institutions seek international clients, employees, instructors, and students. Coursework in business, statistics, and human resources are also helpful if you want
work in EO/AA.
EO/AA Specialists Provide Cross Cultural Support
A significant aspect of EO/AA work is resolving claims of workplace discrimination and sexual harassment. EO/AA specialists must enforce regulations prohibiting these behaviors. They conduct interviews, read written complaints, and provide recommendations to management and human resources for preventing and resolving conflicts. EO/AA officers may also conduct training and informational sessions for their co-workers. Strong communications skills including strong listening, writing, and speaking skills are essential. Your understanding of cultural diversity and its role in human and organizational relations can provide a strong foundation for an EO/AA career.
