Early Childhood Education Takes Center Stage

The question of how best to educate our nation's children has been debated for years. The continuing controversy over the Bush administration's No Child Left Behind program highlights the many different opinions about how to handle this enormous task--and shines a spotlight on our need for more trained teachers and educators.

In 2000, there were more than 72 million children under age 18 in the U.S. Early childhood education focuses on students under the age of 8, from preschool to the second or third grade. Much more than "reading, writing and 'rithmetic," this discipline includes physical, intellectual, emotional and social education--a quartet known in the industry as PIES, for short.

If you're interested in early childhood education and are looking for a degree that will carry weight in the field, there are many campus-based and distance education programs that will prepare you for success.

Distance Education Opportunities

  • Associate's Degree: This two-year degree will put you on the fast track to work experience in early childhood education, although you'll need a higher-level degree to move up after you've worked for a while.
  • Licensure: Many colleges and universities, online and on campus, offer four- and five-year programs focusing on issues like curriculum content and assessment.
  • Advanced Degree: Many campus-based and distance education programs provide advanced training at the master's and doctoral levels.

There has never been a better time to enter the field of early childhood education. Many campus-based and distance education programs provide excellent training and preparation for a career where teachers are badly needed.
