Each year, more and more Americans are turning their aching backs away from traditional medicine and putting them in the hands of certified massage therapists. This exciting field is perfect for those who embrace holistic health concepts.

According to the eighth annual survey of American consumers, commissioned by the American Massage Therapy Association, 90% of respondents agreed that massage can be effective in reducing pain. Nearly half that number has had a massage at some time to relieve their own pain. In addition to pain management, the following benefits of massage therapy should keep your clients coming back for more:

Benefits of Massage Therapy

  • Physical. The well-documented positive physical effects of massage therapy include a lowered heart rate and improved resistance to illness and injury.
  • Mental. Other benefits of massage therapy include easing stress and improving one's holistic mental outlook.
  • Emotional. After a deep massage, clients report feelings of contentment and satisfaction.

The Massage Therapy Career Profile

The U.S. Department of Labor projects that the demand for massage therapy is growing in both older and younger populations.

  • Training. In most states, graduation from a career training program and successful completion of a state or national certification exam is required.
  • Employment Outlook. Employment is expected to increase faster than average through 2014.
  • Salary Potential. Median hourly earnings were $15.36 in May 2004, with 10% of massage therapists earning over $30 per hour.

Employment opportunities for massage therapists have improved, thanks to an increased national interest in alternative medicine and the wide recognition of massage therapy as a useful treatment by health care providers and insurance companies. Distance education can help make your massage therapy training more convenient and more affordable and prepare you for this gratifying career.
