For those of you who thought that a philosophy degree was little more than rhetoric and fluff, you should know that it's launched the careers of some very big names. Here are a few of the famous people that used a philosophy degree as the springboard to the heights of their specialties.
The answer. This game show icon earned his philosophy degree the University of Ottawa with a degree in philosophy. If you answered, "Who is Alex Trebek?" you were right. And the Jeopardy! host isn't the only successful philosophy candidate to walk the ivy halls. There are representatives of undergraduate philosophy training in professions across the board. Here are some of the more memorable personalities that started their careers with a philosophy degree.
Notable Philosophy Graduates
- Michael Cranford. With a host of video game authorings to his credit, software genius Michael Cranford holds a degree in philosophy from the University of California.
- Matt Groening. From the world of art and digital animation, Groening earned his philosophy education from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. The rumor is that he took class notes in the form of comic strips.
- Stone Phillips. Before appearances on Meet the Press and recently sharing the reins on Dateline NBC, Phillips played football and studied philosophy at Yale.
- Gene Siskil. Another Yale philosophy graduate, Gene Siskel revolutionized the movie review business.
- Katharine Hepburn. Movie idol Katherine Hepburn actually double majored in history and philosophy from Bryn Mawr College in the same year as she appeared on Broadway.
