Alternative Medicine: Building a Mainstream Career

Alternative medicine, like acupuncture and holistic nutrition, has made a noticeable difference in the way many people feel. If you'd love to share that discovery with others, career training in alternative medicine puts you in a position to do just that.

"Alternative medicine" refers to the set of health care practices that often replace or complement conventional Western medicine with traditional Eastern treatments. The discipline can work in coordination with or instead of common Western medical practices. In alternative medicine, vitamins and herbs replace prescription drugs and attention to holistic healing replaces the familiar "treating the symptoms" approach. Here are some of the hottest fields of study in alternative medicine.

Alternative Medicine Practices


  • Whole Medical Systems: Treatments in this sector include homeopathic medicine and naturopathic medicine.
  • Mind-Body Medicine: Emphasizes the relationship between the mind and regenerative systems of the body to promote lifelong health.
  • Energy Medicine: This field includes touching therapies such as biofield and bioelectromagnetic-based treatments to revitalize body energy.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a surge in health care employment for the coming decade. And as more people look to alternative medicine for relief, there will be plenty of opportunities for those with the right career education and training.

  • Job Growth: Projected 37% employment increase through 2014.
  • Work Environment: Hospitals, alternative medicine clinics, private practice.
  • Career Training: 2- to 4-year degree plus a year of internship with a clinic.

As the costs of traditional healthcare and prescription medications continue to skyrocket, there's never been a better time to earn career education in alternative medicine.
